Nokia 515
In August 2013, Nokia officially unveiled the Nokia 515 in Moscow. Built on the S40 platform, the phone distinguished itself through its full-aluminum body, refined design, and extended battery life. It went on sale globally on September 16 of the same year.
The Nokia 515 was the successful realization of the Low Cost Full Metal initiative within the Drive Project, an innovation program I led. The objective was to leverage China's advanced manufacturing capabilities to reduce the cost of a premium CNC-machined aluminum back cover, exemplified by the HTC One, from approximately €150 to €15. I led the exploration of two manufacturing approaches—stamping and extrusion—and coordinated comprehensive evaluations with the supply chain and R&D teams. Ultimately, stamped aluminum emerged as the most viable solution, achieving a unit cost of approximately RMB 30, significantly outperforming the project's original cost target and laying the foundation for the Nokia 515's development.
The Nokia 515 was one of the most rewarding projects of my career, giving me the freedom to fully explore my design creativity. Targeting premium customers in markets such as Russia and the Middle East, the project established Premium Design as its foremost priority. This created an opportunity to bring several long-envisioned design concepts into production, including a 3D curved sapphire crystal display, a glass keypad, and a seamless, integrated full-metal back cover. These ideas went beyond conceptual exploration and became tangible product features through close collaboration across design, engineering, and manufacturing.
What makes me particularly proud is that the Nokia 515 not only broke new ground in balancing full-metal design with cost efficiency, but also delivered outstanding commercial results. Based on my experience and observations at the time, it was one of the most profitable products in Nokia China during 2013 and 2014, contributing approximately half of the region's overall profit. This experience reinforced my belief that truly valuable industrial design goes beyond creating exceptional product experiences; it transforms design value into measurable business outcomes through innovation in materials, manufacturing processes, and supply chain collaboration.
